One of the oldest centers of Russian genetics and breeding

Saratov is one of the oldest centers of Russian genetics and breeding, with which the life and scientific path of Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov is inextricably linked. Here, in 1920, a young professor of the Agricultural Faculty of Saratov State University formulated, justified and for the first time presented to the world the law of homological series of hereditary variability, and here, by a tragic coincidence, his bright but short life ended in 1943. Outstanding domestic breeders A.I. Stebut, G.K. Meister, N.V. Tsitsin, A.P. Shekhurdin, E.N. Plachek, V.N. Mamontova  worked in Saratov and created unique varieties and hybrids of wheat, rye, millet, sunflower, including the spring soft wheat variety Saratovskaya 29, is an absolute world record holder, whose cultivation area exceeds 22 million hectares. Saratov province is the birthplace of S.G. Navashin, an outstanding biologist who discovered double fertilization in angiosperms and laid the foundations of karyosystematics.

Currently, several large research centers working in the field of genetics and breeding are actively operating in Saratov: Federal Agrarian Scientific Center of the South-East, Institute of Biochemistry and Physiology of Plants and Microorganisms, Russian Anti-plague Institute «Microbe» of Rospotrebnadzor, Russian Research and Design Technology Institute of Sorghum and Corn «Rossorgo», Saratov State University, Saratov State Vavilov Agrarian University.

Saratov is a historical, cultural and industrial center of the Lower Volga region with a rich 400–year history. It stands at the crossroads of times and cultures, at the place where at the end of the XIV century. Tamerlane destroyed Ukek, one of the largest cities of the Golden Horde. From the end of the XVIII century to the middle of the XX century. Saratov was the capital of the German colonists of the Volga region and still retains in its architecture a combination of Russian old merchant and German styles. Saratov was the first in Russia to open a publicly accessible art gallery (now the A.N. Art Museum Radishchev, 1885), a stationary circus (Saratov State Circus named after the Nikitin Brothers, 1873) and a children’s theater (TYUZ named after Yu.P. Kiselyov, 1918). Currently, 11 theaters, 20 museums, a conservatory and a philharmonic hall operate in Saratov. There are many memorable places in the city associated with the first cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. Here, as a student at an Industrial College, he first sat at the controls of an airplane, and his first space flight ended here on Saratov land.

One of the attractions of Saratov, located on the right bank of the Volga, are the bridges with a length of 3 and 12.7 km, which are among the longest bridges in Europe.

Today Saratov is a modern student city with about two dozen institutes and universities, where more than one hundred thousand students study.

We are waiting for you at the International Congress «VIII Congress of the Vavilov Society of Geneticists and Breeders and associated symposiums» in one of the beautifulest regions of Russia!
